Crew Rule Number Four: Never Trade Numbers in Dubai, Except Once

Every crew has its commandments, and mine has a loophole that arrived in a gold-lit lobby with perfect timing.

Crew Rule Number Four: Never Trade Numbers in Dubai, Except Once

Every airline crew lives by a quiet set of rules, passed from senior to junior over bad coffee at the back of the galley. Rule one: always know where your passport is. Rule two: never complain about the hotel to the hotel. Rule four is the one I have guarded most carefully, which is that you never, ever trade numbers on a layover. Numbers are how a pleasant evening turns into a problem.

Dubai tests that rule better than any city I know. The lobbies glow like jewelry boxes, the air smells faintly of oud and expensive floor polish, and everyone seems to be meeting someone interesting. I had walked through that marble atrium dozens of times with my chin high and my phone firmly in my bag. Discipline, darling, is mostly a matter of habit.

Dubai tests that rule better than any city I know.

Then there was a man at the concierge desk arguing, quite gently, with a clerk over a lost umbrella in a country where it almost never rains. He looked up, saw my uniform, and asked whether I happened to know how one grieves an umbrella. I said it depended on the umbrella. We stood there trading absurdities for twenty minutes.

I want to be clear that I did not break the rule lightly. I weighed it the way you weigh a carry-on that is slightly over the limit, by the way it feels in the hand. When he asked, I took the pen from the desk, and I wrote my number on the back of his hotel receipt. I did it slowly, so we would both remember that I did it.

It was the only time, and I intend it to stay the only time, which is exactly why it has stayed with me. Rules exist so that exceptions can feel like something. If you want to know what he did with that receipt, and what rule four cost me in the end, the story picks up on TheFriend.

One receipt, one pen, and a rule I had never broken before. Hear what came after the ink dried, only on TheFriend.
